Church History

Most churches are born in sacrifice of time and money by a relatively few members. That was true of the two churches which merged to form the West Covina Hills church. In 1952, the Baldwin Park church was built and it was one of the most beautiful churches in the area. They had an average membership of 300. The first pastor was Elder Merrill Enright, and the last pastor was Elder Robert Clark in 1980.

The Covina church was completed in 1956. It was a lovely building complete with a kitchen for fellowship dinners. They had an average membership of 250. The first pastor was Elder John Reeves, and the last pastor was Elder Robert Odell in 1980.

Both churches sent some of their school-age children to the Baldwin Park school. By 1974, the school was in serious disrepair. Aftr much discussion, it was decided to explore the possibility of selling the school and the two churches, and merge them to build a new school and church. In 1978, the Southern California Conference Association gave the approval for Elder Bob Clark of the Baldwin Park church and Elder Robert Odell of the Covina church to ask Lillian Smith, a church member and real estate broker, to search for suitable property. She located the property at the present site, owned by a member of the Beth Ami Temple. From this date, until the church was built and the grand opening in April of 1983, there was a series of miracles that made this church possible.

While the merger negotiations were going on, the two churches decided to meet in the Covina church until a new church was built. Pastors Clark and Odell accepted calls elsewhere, and Elder J. O. Iverson became the interim pastor. As with all church mergers, many members elected to go elsewhere, leaving about 200 members remaining from the combined churches. For months, Elder Iverson and the building committee visited churches every Sunday in caravans, deciding questions about design, overall structure, interior colors, room placement and furnishings, In January, 1981, Elder Don Stutler came on board as our pastor and project coordinator, with Audrey Gainer as treasurer and Earl King as general contractor. In early 1982, we rented the facilities of the Village Covenant Church on Barrance and Gladstone while our church was being built. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of these people, our beautiful church was completed in April, 1983.

Our church was built with a seating capacity of 550, and we now have over 600 members on the church books. We have called it our "miracle church" because we have seen how the Lord has supplied our needs just when He knew we needed it most, and how He has had His hand upon a dedicated people. Those of us who attend today are very grateful for the sacrifices of those who made this beautiful church and school possible.
